The Action Group: toolkit for entrepreneurship and innovation in maritime education
The Action Group toolkit to inspire maritime students and integrate innovation into education.

The Dutch maritime sector has been a proud world example for centuries. But the world is changing rapidly, and so is this sector. Sustainability, new technologies and the challenges of a changing society require a fresh look. How do you ensure that the new generation not only sails along, but sets the course? At Firda, they came up with something to do just that: together with Raccoon Serious Games and New Future Lab, they developed a toolkit that really brings innovation into education. Discover how "The Action Group" inspires students and gets them moving.
The Dutch maritime sector has been a global leader for centuries. However, the sector is changing rapidly and needs to keep up with major transitions. At Firda (formerly: ROC Friese Poort), the young generation works on maintaining this success. Innovation is an important pillar. As part of a lab, Firda develops tools and processes for teachers to teach students skills for a future-proof maritime sector. ROC Friese Poort was already familiar with Raccoon through other innovation solutions, including 'Foute Vangst'. So we were asked and selected to develop this toolkit.
'The Action Group': Toolkit for Maritime Renewal
'The Action Group' is a comprehensive toolkit for innovation in maritime education. It allows educators to organize structured hackathons or innovation classes to work with students on pressing questions for the industry. This is done under the guise of an "action group. First, students are asked to create an action board to take a stand on the issue. With various playful exercises such as brainstorms and research canvases, students are then challenged to come up with constructive solutions. In closing, students present these solutions to a panel of judges in the form of a positive protest!
The Result: Students in their Power
The result of "The Action Group" is a tool that empowers students. At a time when the maritime sector is facing challenges, students experience that they can actively contribute to solutions. 'The Action Group' is a tool through which students not only learn about innovation, but also experience and apply it themselves.
"This innovation accelerator turns the tide from negativity to an ocean of positivity; each obstacle provides the opportunity for a thoughtful response or a purposeful plan."
Pieter Kaptein - policy advisor, Firda
